Mounir Baziz grew up in Algeria, and has been playing the violin since he was eight. After studying at the legendary El Moussilia music academy in Algiers in 1984, Moon began to develop his own musical style, and was soon performing at the top recording studios and concert halls in Algeria. He was a principal member of the official Algerian TV ensemble and, from the age of twelve, Moon represented his country at many international music festivals all over Europe and the Middle East. He decided to expand his horizons and set off for Spain, where he encountered many gypsy bands and picked up influences from Spanish flamenco music. Then Moon came to London where his career took a significant turn.
Whilst in London, Mounir started to experiment with electric violin and various new effects and techniques borrowed from Jazz, Blues and Soul music. When he incorporated these new influences into his playing, the result was a completely new and exciting style of his own. His distinctive style of playing the violin vertically on his knee intrigued the London audiences. He started playing in several small venues and jamming sessions around London, and before long he was performing in concerts at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London's South Bank. His performance at the world famous Abbey Road Studios in the firstever global satellite broadcast went out to 134 countries around the world.
Recently Moon has worked with acclaimed Indian singer Amar, the multi-talented percussionist Pete Lockett, and the atmospheric new London act Shemran. With albums due out this year by Shemran and Pete Lockett, Moon's distinctive style of playing will soon be brought to new audiences.
